The Uttar Pradesh Police is anticipating a new Director General of Police as DGP RK Vishwarkarma is set to retire this month. The force witnessed a fresh reshuffle of top IPS officers of the rank of DGP last week giving them new posts while speculations are riff for the post of the Chief of UP Police.

DGP RK Vishwakarma was appointed as the officiating DGP of UP Police after the retirement of DS Chauhan in April this year. The question now arises as to who would be the next DGP of UP?

The 1988 batch IPS officer, RK Vishwakarma is the officiating DGP of UP Police.

The 1987 batch IPS officer, is the senior most IPS officer in UP Police who was also the DGP of UP, however he was removed from the post of DGP and DS Chauhan was made the DGP. After the retirement of Chauhan, Vishwakarma was appointed as DG in March who had two months left for retirement.

Although Mukul Goel is the senior most IPS in UP Police now DG Civil Defence, he doesn’t feature as the probable front runner as he was earlier removed from the post of the DGP citing ‘neglect of work, indolence’.

With the senior most IPS officer out of the race, the batch of 1988 officers are the probable front runners for the post. As the same batch officer Vishwakarma is set to retire, his batchmates Anand Kumar, DG Cooperative Cell is one of the frontrunners for the post.

The 1989 batch IPS officer, Ashish Gupta who is waiting for a posting since his return from central deputation is the second senior most IPS officer who could the second front runner for the post.

The names of Anand Kumar and Vijay Kumar were being discussed during the retirement of DS Chauhan too yet the UP Government appointed RK Vishwakarma who had only two months to retire as the officiating DGP.

The UP Government recently transferred the batch of 1990 batch IPS officers who are all of the rank of DGP.

Last week, the government had reshuffled seven top IPS officers giving them new posts.

Prashant Kumar who has been the ADG (Law and Order) was recently promoted as Special DG (Law and Order) and in the recent reshuffle was also given the charge of the Economic Offences Wing.

His batchmate, DG Renuka Mishra was appointed as DG Training while Tanuja Shrivastava, DG Rule and Manual was given additional charge of SIT.

It has come to the fore that officers of the 1990 batch are also in the race for the post of the DGP. The names of IPS officers of this batch are DG Rules and Manual, Tanuja Shrivastava and DG Human Rights, Satish Kumar Mathur who are reportedly being considered.

The sources in UP Police stated that the chances for Vijay Kumar getting the key post are higher than Anand Kumar however the final decision lies with the government. The government also has to decide whether they would appoint a regular DGP or an officiating DGP till they finalize the name for regular DGP.

Vishwakarma, before assuming the charge as DGP was the DG Recruitment Board; the position is lying vacant and so is the position of DG Intelligence as former DGP DS Chauhan retired.

With the retirement of Vishwakarma on May 30, the UP Police is now waiting to welcome the new DGP.
