The Uttar Pradesh Government suspended superintendents of Banda, Naini and Bareilley district jails for providing undue facilities to high-profile prisoners.

The three suspended jail superintendents are Avinash Gautam (Banda), Shashi Kant Singh (Naini) and Rajeev Shukla (Bareilly). 

The UP administration had been conducting regular checks from last few months wherein they found jail staff accepting bribe to offer favours to the high profile inmates. The state government shunted out Director General (Prisons) Anand Kumar to the UP Police Cooperative Cell. 

A week ago, UP Police had arrested jail employees of Chitrakoot and Bareilly on similar charges who were also later suspended by the administration.

It is to be noted that former MP Atiq Ahmed’s son Ali Ahmed, his brother Khalid Azim, alias, Ashraf, and former MLA Mukhtar Ansari have, at present, been lodged at Naini, Bareilly and Banda jails.

The prisons department had conducted a surprise check at Naini, Bareilly and Banda jails and seized “objectionable objects” and found “undue favours given to a few inmates”.

Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Shiv Hari Meena and SP (SIT) Subhash Chandra Shakya have been transferred to the Prison Department, while State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Commandant Hemant Kutiyal, 23rd Battalion PAC (Moradabad) Commandant Himanshu Kumar and SP (VIP) Rajesh Kumar Srivastava have been given additional charge of the Prison Department.
