Punjab Police books three officers for bribery who were probing 2019 Dera head murder

The accused officers are Faridkot Superintendent of Police Gagnesh Kumar Sharma, DSP Sushil Kumar Prashar, and sub-inspector Khem Chand

The Faridkot police have booked three officers of a special investigation team and two others in a bribery case in connection with a 2019 murder case in Punjab.

The accused officers are Faridkot Superintendent of Police Gagnesh Kumar Sharma, DSP Sushil Kumar Prashar, and sub-inspector Khem Chand.  The other two who have been booked are Malkiat Singh and Jassi Thekedar who are the mediators in the bribery case.

The police registered a case based on the complaint of a Dera head Gagan Das in Kot Sukhiya village of Faridkot. As per the complaint, the police have sought a bribe of Rs 50 lakh in the case where two unidentified youngsters entered his Harka Das Dera in November 2019 and fired gunshots at the then Dera deputy head Dayal Das who later died.

Gagan Das stated that the police officers in the special investigation team (SIT) formed to investigate the murder case finally reached a settlement at Rs 35 lakh out of which he had given them Rs 20 lakh. The officers had threatened to include him in the case if he did not oblige to their demand.  

After the murder, the police booked three people on the complaint of Gagan Das and one of them was Jarnail Das, the head of a Moga-based Dera.
