Nine dead and several taken ill after consuming spurious liquor in Rae Bareli, DGP orders investigations

The liquor was purchased from a licensed store in Maharajganj, the owner of which is absconding. The District Excise officer Rajeshwari Maurya will be one of the main accused in the case and face a chargesheet while Excise Inspector Ajay Kumar and Constable Dhirendra Shrivastava have been suspended.

Nine died including an elderly woman and some others have been reported seriously ill after consuming liquor in Paharpur village of Rae Bareli in UP. 

The police said the incident took plce during a programme in the village on January 26 night during which people had consumed liquor. 

The deceased have been identified as Kalu, Raj Babu, Qasim, Pankaj, Chandra Gopal, Saroj, Ram, Sukhrani and Bansi Lal. While Raj Babu was from Chattarpur in MP and Qasim from Hamirpur in UP, rest of the deacvesed were from Rae Bareli. 

Those who were reported seriously ill have been admitted to the Community Health Centre. 

DGP UP, Mukul Goel has ordered an investigation into the case. IGP Lucknow Range Lakshm Goel has been asked to supervise the probe. 

The initial probe has shown that the liquor was purchased from liquor store in Mahrajganj. The owner of the licensed shop Dhirendra Pal Singh and his aides are on the run after the incident. 

The police have sent the bodies of the deceased for post mortem after which more details would be confirmed, they added. 

The police added that district excise officer Rajeshwari Maurya will be one of the main accused in the case and face a chargesheet while excise inspector Ajay Kumar and Constable Dhirndra Shrivastava have been suspended.

The police suspect that more persons consumed the same spurious liquor and searches are being conducted in the area and areas in neighbhourhood to identify those.
