New Delhi, January 21

A jail inmate at Arthur Road in Mumbai allegedly hanged himself to death. 

The police identified him as Mohamed Hanif Mohamed Iqbal Sheikh, who was arrested in a theft case by JJ Marg police. 

The police said he allegedly used a bedsheet to hang himself inside the toilet. However, no suicide note was found near him. 

When the jail authorities were conducting the routine ‘call out’ of prisoners, he didn’t respond for a long time. They searched for him everywhere and found that a cabin in the toilet was locked from inside. 

The tap was running but when he didn’t respond inspite of several calls, they broke it open and found him handing with a bed sheet. 

The deceased’s body was sent to JJ Hospital, where a post-mortem was conducted. The preliminary report showed that there were no injury marks on the body.

The police said Hanif was arrested last month for committing multiple thefts in the jurisdiction of JJ Marg police station.
