Mob attacks home of an ASP in Manipur,abducts his escort, later rescued

Around 200 armed men attacked the house of a Additional Superintendent of Police in Imphal East and abducted him along with one of his escorts. With the unrest starting in Manipur, the the Indian Army was called in and four columns of the Assam Rifles were deployed.

ASP Moirangthem Amit Singh and his escort were later rescued from the Kwakeithel Konjeng Leikai area and admitted to a private hospital in Imphal for treatment. 

The police said the armed men had arrived at Moiangthem’s residence in the Wangkhei area of Imphal East and vandalised the property. Four vehicles parked inside the property were damaged in the attack. 

It is is being discussed that the incident occurred after Amit arrested six members of Arambai Tenggol for their alleged involvement in a car theft. It is suspected that the mob belonged to members of the radical Metiei group Arambai Tenggol. 

The ASP’s father, Dr Moirangthem Kulachandra told media that the attackers were wearing some kind of uniform and barged into the house and ransacked the property. They opened fire following which the family members hid themselves. The ASP ws not present at home. 

The ASP and additional security forces rushed to the spot after the attack. The mob opened fire atthe ASP and other police oficials after which as exchange of fire followed.

The attackers then abducted the ASP and his escort and released them after some time. Two more persons got injured who were admitted to hospitals in Imphal East.
