The girl and her father were allegedly facing pressure and harassment to compromise in the case, alleged police inaction and pressure on them

New Delhi, June 7

A minor rape victim’s father dies by suicide at his home in Jalaun district as he was allegedly facing pressure from police to compromise in the case. 

As per the case details, the father had filed a complaint with local police that his daughter went to a family friend’s house to attend a birthday party on March 28. He alleged that his daughter was raped by a man known to his family friend at the function. He also said the family friend and his wife threatened the victim of dire consequences if she told someone about the sexual assault.

When the victim’s parents who work as labourers in Punjab, returned home to Jalaun on May 30, she told them about the rape. The family alleged that though they approached the local police station the next day, they were turned back. However, after the intervention of senior police officials, the local police registered the FIR.

The police had registered a FIR on June 4 against a 22-year-old man and a couple on charges of rape and criminal intimidation under the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The main accused and the couple were arrested by police immediately. 

The girl's mother told media that her husband was being continuously threatened and pressurized to withdraw the case. The girl was also being threatened. The family faced immense issues for filing a complaint and after filing a complaint, they were being pressurized. 

The police had also not conducted the medial examination of the girl and also did not record her statement before a magistrate. When the police reached the house upon learning about the man’s death, the family and the local residents protested. 

Jalaun SP has ordered an inquiry into the matter and additional superintendent of police had been directed to conduct an inquiry into the death, and action would be taken based on the report.
