New Delhi, July 29

The Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID) case against former special PP Pravin Chavan in alleged framing of BJP leaders reportedly exposed by then opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis will be handed over the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A purported video recording was presented by then Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis before the Deputy Speaker during the Assembly session in March in which Chavan was talking about “framing BJP leaders” in the state.

The pen drive containing the video had created a political storm in Maharashtra and then state home minister Dilip Walse-Patil had ordered for investigation by Maharashtra CID.

Chavan had also voluntarily resigned as the special public prosecutor in a case in which BJP leader Girish Mahajan and 28 others were booked for extortion and criminal conspiracy by the Jalgaon police. The case was transferred to the Pune Police last year.

The Girish Mahajan case has already been transferred to the CBI.

The Maharashtra CID had submitted their report to the state government which will further initiate the process seeking request from the Centre to transfer the case to the CBI.
