The Faridabad Police have booked an interfaith couple and nine others under Haryana’s anti-conversion law making this the first case to be registered under the recently passed law.

In March, the Haryana Assembly had passed the Haryana Prevention of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill, 2022, with the government stating that it was aimed at preventing religious conversions “through force, undue influence or allurement”.

The Cabinet approved implementation of the Haryana Prevention of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act 2022.

The police had received a complaint from the father of a 22-year-old Hindu woman that his daughter had recently married a man from another community and that she had allegedly been forcibly and illegally converted by him and his family.

The father alleged that on the fateful day, he had dropped his daughter off at the bank where she works but later he received a call from her workplace that she didn’t report to work; on the same day the girl reportedly converted to Islam and got married to the man.

It was also learnt later that the couple had applied for police protection after marriage and protection was granted for three days.

The FIR has been registered against the couple, the man’s brother, his parents, the Qazi who solemnised the marriage, two witnesses and a notary public under sections 12 (1) and 12 (5) of The Haryana Prevention of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act 2022. The act carries imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of Rs 2 lakhs.
