The accused at both the call centres cheated US citizens by posing as customs, FBI and more

New Delhi, July 31

Delhi Police West District held 65 persons from Hari Nagar for allegedly posing as US government officials and cheating US citizens. 

The accused were identified as Lakhan Jagwani and Vijender Singh Rawat who ares owners of the illegal call centre and 63 other who were working as callers. 

The police raided a acall centre and found many of the accused allegedly engaged in calls, threatening US citizens that they are involved in crimes and may lose their social security number (SSN) and bank accounts.

DCP (West) Urvija Goel stated that the accused used to pose as  US Customs and Order Protection Department, drug enforcement agency or FBI. They claimed to offer medical services in the US.

The police seized 58 computers at the centre, software and devices used to obtain data of US citizens and call them and found 

the accused were making international calls through illegal gateways.  

According to the police, they used to initially send a pre-recorded call to victims which says their SSN will be suspended. The victims were directed to speak to ‘callers’ who would pose as government officials and tell them the agency has received a drug parcel with the names of the victim. The accused threatened to seize their SSN, bank accounts, and property. The victims, to “save themselves”, were asked to transfer all their money to e-gift cards.

In a similar operation, South District of Delhi Police busted a fake call centre in Malviya Nagar and arrested five persons for cheating US citizens.

DCP (South) Atul Thakur stated that the fake call centre is running in Panchsheel Vihar. The accused were using Xlite software for making calls to US citizens.

The police added that the call centre was operating from six-seven months.

The police are further investigating the case to find more victims of the fraud.
