Delhi Police arrests one posing as member of gangster Randeep Bhati gang, gave extortion calls from Pak number

The accused lost all his money in stocks and also mortaged gold at the jeweller's whom he decided to threaten for extortion money

New Delhi, January 9

The Delhi Police held one in Bhajanpura of North East district who posed as member of Randeep Bhati gang and extorted money from a jeweller by calling from Pakistan number. 

Shekhar Soni, a jeweller in Bhajanpura, Delhi alleged that one person called him over phone from a Pakistani number and disclosed himself to be Tarun Bhati from Randeep Bhati gang and demanded Rs. 1.5 lakh as extortion money and threatened to kill him if the money not arranged. The complainant also provided recordings of the threat which appeared to be serious. 

DCP (NorthEast) Sanjay Sain stated that the main challenge was that the mobile number used for threat was from Pakistan and the IP address was of Philadelphia, USA. However, concerted efforts were made to trace the details of mobile phone and IP address through various telecom/internet operators (National and International). In that process details of more than 50 suspected mobile numbers were analyzed. 

On the basis of detailed analysis of different numbers, police team zeroed-in on a person residing in Ghonda, Delhi the information was further developed through local informers and raids were conducted at different places and one Ajay Kumar of North Ghonda was apprehended from his house, DCP Sain added. 

During his interrogation, he disclosed that in the year 2019 he sold his house and invested the sale proceeds around Rs 27 lakhs in share market. He lost almost all the money and was going through financial hardships. In July 2022 he approached his neighbouring jeweller (complainant Shekhar Soni) and got released his jewellery from Muthoot Finance and sold the same to the complainant. 

He got an idea to threaten the complainant and to make some easy money. He arranged fake number through anonymous persons on Facebook. The mobile phone used in the commission of the offence seized, officials added. 

The police are further investigating the case.
