Delhi Police EOW held a conman from Kolkata who cheated a retd Army officer of Rs. 2.5 crores

The accused was identified as Joyjeet Sarkar from Kestopur in West Bengal. He is an engineer and previously worked in Punj Llyod in Delhi as Junior Engineer. He deals in share market as well as crypto currency

The Delhi Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested an conman from Kolkata who alleged duped a former senior Army officer 

The accused was identified as Joyjeet Sarkar from Kestopur in West Bengal. He is an engineer and previously worked in Punj Llyod in Delhi as Junior Engineer. 

He later completed a digital marketing course from Saket, Delhi and met with other associates involved in this case.  He deals in share market as well as crypto currency.

Retired Colonel Raghujit Singh had filed a complaint with the EOW that he invested Rs 20 lakhs in ICICI Prudential Life insurance company through an agent/bank official. When he was in need of money he could not get premature surrendered value of the policy. In the year 2012-13, complainant telephonically contacted OP Rathore and he helped complainant to get reimburse of policy value. 

The officials added that the complainant developed trust on Rathore and further invested Rs. 50 lakhs in different polices. Thereafter Rathore switched off his mobile phone. 

The officials further added that in 2017, accused Ajay Awasthi, in a well-planned manner, called the complainant and allured him to deposit a little amount to get reimbursed the amount of policy, as little amount was required to pay some taxes etc. The complainant was too much influenced with alleged persons and on their assurance he further paid Rs. 2.4 crore to different person’s accounts. The complainant also borrowed money from his relatives to pay the accused.

The EOW investigation revealed that  Colonel Raghujit Singh had transferred amount of Rs. 2.4 crores from his Oriental Bank of Commerce and SBI accounts to accounts of alleged persons maintained with Axis Bank, IDBI Bank HDFC Bank and PNB. Further details from beneficiary accounts were obtained. The main beneficiary of the amount was accused Joyjit Sarkar and he mentioned different addresses in his bank accounts. In the accounts of IDBI bank and HDFC Banks he mentioned his address as A-169, Majlis Park Delhi, and RU-481 GF MIG Flats Pitampura Delhi. 

The EOW conducted searches at several locations in Delhi but he was not found there.

The officials added that Joyjeet Sarkar was absconding and changing his whereabouts. However, the police received information that family of accused Joyjeet Sarkar is residing in Kolkata. The Delhi EOW tracked him down to Kestopur in Kolkata.

Jt CP (EOW) Chhaya Sharma stated that the retired officer was cheated by bluffing to reimburse the invested amount of insurance policy. The alleged in a well planned manner called the complainant, allured him to deposit a little amount to get reimbursed the amount of policy, as this little amount is required to pay some taxes etc. Time and again the accused kept on calling the complainant and showing the lacunas in the procedure for reimbursement of the policy amount. They kept on alluring the complainant to get more and more money by assuring him that the accused shall handle all lacunas if the payments are made.

WORDS OF CAUTION FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC:

The general public is hereby cautioned not to get trapped in such types of Frauds. There are numerous cheats roaming all around inducing the general public particularly the Defence Personnel on the pretext of  offering facilities for getting released outstanding Insurance amounts including bonus, maturities etc. There are no such facilitating centres and if demands of processing fees are made telephonically, the concerned Insurance Authorities should be contacted immediately for clarifications.
