Delhi Police ASI dies while catching a mobile thief, stabbed by the robber

New Delhi, January 9

The Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was stabbed multiple times while trying to arrest a man accused of snatching a mobile phone earlier this week succumbed to his injuries.

ASI Shambhu Dayal (57) was taking the thief to the police station when he was stabbed in Mayapuri on January 4. He was rushed to BLK Hospital but died during treatment.

As per the case details, a woman had approached Dayal for help after her phone was allegedly snatched by a man at knifepoint. Dayal took the complainant to the spot to identify the accused. The woman pointed out the person and he caught the accused.

The accused was identified as Anish Raj (24) ofthe same area of Mayapuri. While Dayal was taking Anish to the police station, the latter pulled out a knife which he had kept hidden under his shirt and attacked him. He sustained injuries on his chest, abdomen, neck and even on his back as he was stabbed multiple times.

The accused tried to flee but Dayal caught him and alerted his colleagues, who overpowered and arrested him. 

DCP (West) Ghanshyam Bansal states that ASI Dayal served for almost 30 years in the force. He is survived by his wife and three children. His bravery will always be remembered. We are in constant touch with his family and will help them. He fought for four days at the hospital.

Hailing from Sikar district in Rajasthan, Dayal joined the force in 1993 as a constable. He was the sole breadwinner of his family. He recently joined the Mayapuri police station.

The Delhi Police have expressed condolences to the family of Dayal and assured all help to his wife and children.
