Punjab CM designate Bhagwant Mann

New Delhi, March 12

The CM-designate Bhagwant Mann met Chief Secretary Anirudh Tewari and Punjab DGP VK Bhawra at his residence in Mohali.

The meeting with the DGP and CS was called in connection with the oath taking ceremony at Khatkar Kalan on March 16. Mann will also carry out a road show after his victory on March 13.

The speculations on the change of guard in the DGP office as well as CS officer are on.

The AAP is expected to retain the DGP while appoint a new Chief Secretary in Punjab. However, there are speculation that after a brief period, the new CM, may appoint a new DGP in Punjab.

The officials added that it is too soon to name the next contender but there are chances of other Director General rank officers to take over as the new DGP of Punjab.

During the previous regime of Congress led by Charanjit Singh Channi, three officers took over as the DGP Punjab within short period of time.

The Punjab Government in September had appointed Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota as the new DGP of Punjab as an additional charge.

An alleged "information leak" on a drug case from the police headquarters was also being stated as one of the reasons behind Sahota's removal.

Sahota's appointment had led to differences among the ministers in the present regime of Punjab.

The camp led by Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu was reportedly against Sahota's appointment as DGP. Following Sidhu’s pressure, the government, led by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, sent the panel of 10 officers to the UPSC on September 30, ensuring Chattopadhyaya remained on that list.

Sahota was removed from the post of DGP on December 18 in a surprise move by then CM Charanjit Singh Channi and home minister Sukhjinder Randhawa.

However, citing the UPSC rules that a candidate for the position should have six months remaining on their service period, as per the norm, Chattopadhyaya who will retire this month, was removed from the post.

The Centre appointed VK Bhawra as the third DGP of Punjab within a span of three months.
