New Delhi, February 1

The students in Bengaluru who were protesting over removal of BR Ambedkar’s portraying from the dais during Republic Day celebrations were allegedly lathi charged by Bengaluru Police.

The incident took place inside the Bengaluru University campus where hundreds of students took out a protest.

The police said that incident left a few policemen injured including the ACP present at the spot.

The police said the members of the Bangalore University Post Graduation and Research Scholars Forum (BUPGRSF) were staging a protest against Principal District and Sessions Judge Mallikarjuna Gowda over the alleged removal of Dr B R Ambedkar’s portrait from the dais during the Republic Day celebrations in Raichur.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists reportedly came to the spot where BUPGRSF members were protesting, and started agitating over the ‘pathetic’ condition of university hostels and the ‘delay’ in distribution of grade cards to former students.

The police added that a scuffle started between the members of the two groups, which worsened the situation. The police had to resort to lathi charge and use force to disperse the crowd.

The BUPGRSF members alleged they were peacefully protesting but the ABVP resorted to violence by bringing in 100 boys to the spots and attacked them while the ABVP students claimed that they were protesting against the delay in the issuance of marksheets and the police targeted only ABVP students.

The Bengaluru police maintained none of the groups sought permission which is mandatory to hold a protest.  When the police tried to convince ABVP members to leave the campus, saying they would request the vice chancellor or the registrar to receive their memorandum at the university gate. Meanwhile, two groups clashed with each other.
