AAP MLA Amantullah Khan arrested for staging protest against demolition drive in South Delhi

Amantullah Khan said in a tweet, “The MCD is destroying houses of the poor in Kanchan Kunj of Madanpur Khadar. I am reaching there all of you (supporters) should also reach there so that the houses of the poor can be saved".

The Delhi Police arrested Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Okhla Amanatullah Khan while he was staging a protest in south Delhi's Madanpur Khadar. Khan was booked for obstructing the demolition drive in areas of South East Delhi.  

The civic bodies in Delhi have taken up anti encroachment drive that strated from Jahangirpuri following the clashes on Hanuman Jayanti. 

The political groups had alleged that the accused arrested and found involved in Jahangirpuri violence were illegal immigrants in Delhi who have set up their base in slums and JJ clusters across the city. 

Khan was arrested when he was staging a protest during a demolition drive at Madanpur Khadar. The locals too gathered on the streets in high numbers and raised slogans against the MCD. 

Clashes erupted between locals and police, and in the midst of this, Amanatullah Khan was detained by the Delhi Police

In Madanpur Khadar, Khan said the drive is against the poor and appealed to his supporters to reach Kanchan Kunj for the protest.

Amantullah Khan said in a tweet, “The MCD is destroying houses of the poor in Kanchan Kunj of Madanpur Khadar. I am reaching there all of you (supporters) should also reach there so that the houses of the poor can be saved". 

The arrest of Amantullah Khan has sparked protests and campaigns on social media with hashtag #ReleaseAmantullahKhan. The locals from Okhla, Shaheen Bagh, Batla House, Madanpur Khadar and adjoining areas have been demanding the release of Khan. 

Khan's wife Shafia made a public appeal on social media asking citizens of Okhla to hold protests against the arrest of her husband Amantullah Khan. She tweeted in Hindi that Delhi Police arrested her husband and she appeals to residents of Okhla to protest against his arrest. She claimed after his arrest she has no information bof how whereabouts and his condition and expressed fear of his life. 

Based on the complaint filed by the SDMC's Central Zone licensing inspector, an FIR was registered against Aamanatullah Khan and his supporters under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
