'Book Nook' by IPS officer Pragya Jain to bring knowledge, fun, learning for children of Ludhiana Police

A child of a policeman grows up seeing his parent in uniform, carrying a service arm, investigating cases, ensuring law and order when he visits police stations or workplaces of their parent. The children of Ludhiana police will however receive heaps of knowledge, hint of colour and liveliness in a library specially made for police children in Ludhiana.

In a first, the Punjab Police in have started a library for police children in Saanjh Ludhiana Commissionerate, a brain child of IPS officer Dr. Pragya Jain. 

Ludhiana revers Pragya Jain as the only woman office in the state so far to go beyond call of duty to aide a minor rape victim. She won accolades and immense love from the city for her sincere work for the victim.

The library conceptualized by officer Pragya Jain is named "Book Nook" which was thought over, designed and readied to roll in just 72 hours.

Speaking about her brainchild library, Dr. pragya Jain, Add DCP, Ludhiana said, "A great sense of fulfillment that the library was completed in just three days with spontaneous support from all stakeholders. It is personally one of the most fulfilling initiatives till date for me. From conceptualization to execution, Book Nook became a reality in just three days. I profusely thank Rakesh Agarwal, Commissioner, Ludhiana Police whose unflinching belief pushed us to challenge our limits. Projects like these will also encourage age old reading habit in our present generation as well as reduce screen time on social media".

The library is state of the art campus with aesthetic seating arrangement, CCTV cameras and air conditioning for police children from the age of four years to 18 years wih demarcated reading sections for all age groups.

The library is quipped with more than 1000 books in English, Hindi, Punjabi in all all categories-fiction, non fiction, self help, educational, encyclopaedias and more by authors of international repute.

The library is operational for wards of police personnel of all ranks from GOs to the Class four employees.

In addition to that, an e-learning stations with access to internet has been provided to the kids to learn on e-learning platforms.

Officer Pragya Jain thoughtfully created a special activity area for the toddlers of four to six year old with several board games and indoor educational activities to boost motor skills. The activity area has a thematic star studded tent, a favourite spot to visit among many kids.

DGP Punjab, Dinkar Gupta inaugurated the library in the presence of Ludhiana Police Commissioner Rakesh Agarwal on August 6.

Add DCP Pragya Jain added, "What fills me with rare happiness is the fact that we have also given a job to Madhu, a political science graduate. She is the daughter of a Class IV employee working as a gardener at the Police Lines. She will be handling the reception and day to day functioning, which will promote a sense of ownership and belonging. She will get a monthly stipend of Rs 4,000".

The project has been set up with NGO Aas Ehsaas in Ludhiana who aided Punjab Police in the endeavour.

The Ludhiana police informed that the children have already started visiting the library and using the activity area.

The officials opined that this is the first time the children of policemen have been thought about and a step was taken for their welfare and growth.

Add DCP Pragya Jain had recently helped a 19-year-old girl from Bihar find her husband in Ludhiana. The husband of the woman who left Patna with no money, mobile phone or belongings was traced in a factory with persistent efforts of the officer.

Dr. Pragya Jain is an IPS officer of 2017 batch who is a doctor turned IPS officer. An avid book lover herself, this was her dream to bring books closer to police kids.
