New Delhi, March 22

The Uttar Pradesh Police arrested five persons in connection with the murder of Umesh Pal, a witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal, and his two police guards in Prayagraj.

The accused have been identified as Niyaz Ahmed, Mohammad Sajar, Kaish Ahmed and Mohammad Arshad Khan, alias Arshad Katra of Prayagraj and Rakesh Kumar, alias Nakesh Kumar Lala of Kaushambi. Two of the arrested accused, Kaish Ahmed and Rakesh Kumar, are Atiq’s driver and domestic help, respectively.

Earlier, the police had gunned down two persons and arrested one.

The police claimed to have recovered Rs 2.25 lakh in cash and six cellphones from the accused.

The police have recovered Rs 72.37 lakh in cash, arms and ammunition from Atiq’s office. The total amount recovered from Atiq’s office and others arrested people is Rs 74.62 lakh.

The police also demolished some walls of Atiq’s office and dug the ground during the search operation.
