A key witness in the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Raju Pal, was brutally killed with bullets in broad daylight near his residence at Prayagraj. The UP Police arrested son of former SP leader, now lodged in jail, Atiq Ahmed who was one of the main shooters in the murder.

The incident took place in board daylight in Prayagraj leaving hundreds of people shocked as assailants arrived in cars and bikes while tailing the car of the victim, Umesh Pal (48) who was shot at just as he stepped out of his car. He was under security cover of two policemen, one of whom also died in the firing. 

The police collected CCTV footage from the spot that showed several men attacking Umesh Pal as he ran to save his life but seven bullets were pumped into him. 

His wife Jaya Pal had got an FIR registered against jailed former MP Atiq Ahmed, his wife Shaista Parveen, their son, his younger brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf and others. While Atiq is currently in a jail in Gujarat, Ashraf is lodged in Bareilly Central Jail.

Mohammad Umar (24), the eldest of the five sons of Atiq, is lodged in Lucknow district jail. He had surrendered before a court in Lucknow in October last year in connection with a case abduction of a businessman in 2018. Police had announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh on Umar’s arrested.

Atiq’s second son, Ali (22), had surrendered in July last year. He was wanted in a case of assault on a property dealer in December 2021 in the Kareli area of Prayagraj. Ali, who is currently in Naini Central Jail, carried a reward of Rs 50,000. 

Among the four assailants were mafia and former MP Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad Ahmed, Atiq Ahmed’s close aide Guddu Muslim, Arman, and Mohammed Ghulam. who are now in police custody.

The police collected CCTV footage of the area that recorded the gruesome daylgiht murder. While some assailants were seen and identified in the footage, others are yet unidentified. 

After analyzing the CCTV footage, the police have reported that the attackers arrived at the scene in both a car and a motorcycle. The police have also stated that the assailants were pursuing Umesh Pal’s vehicle and had crude explosive devices in their possession. In one of the video clips obtained, an individual can be seen removing a bomb from their bag and throwing it at Umesh Pal. The police said additional men used improvised explosive devices during the attack, resulting in a cloud of smoke.

The purported clip showed that accused Guddu Muslim was found throwing bombs in the CCTV footage while Asad was found shooting at Pal continuously. 

The UP Special Task Force (STF) that is aiding the UP Police in investigations have also found out that Atiq Ahmd who is lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail of Gujarat, had planned the murder. The sources stated that Aitq will be questioned by the STF in jail. 

The STF has also learnt that Atiq's son was having issues with Umesh Pal as the latter had some issues with a real estate dealer close to Asad. However, the STd is ascertaining the facts behind the incident.
